However, the small business grant is still available (even in these very lean times!) as a potential source of funding for you dream of self-employment. A small business grant such as an SBIR grant is part of a program funded by the federal government which provides capital for start up businesses. Sometimes a small business grant will simply give the money to a recipient with no requirement of repayment. Other business grants will require you to repay them with a minimal amount of interest over a period of years. Whether or not a small business grant requires repayment will depend on the nature of the grant itself. Obtaining a small business grant is certainly no simple matter. In truth, over a million applications are received every year with only hundreds being awarded. However, the fact that only a few hundred are awarded does not necessarily mean that the others were turned down for lack of funding.There are specialized grant programs for minorities, new businesses, and women owned businesses.

Quite the opposite, it is very common for a small business grant to be turned down due to filing mistakes as opposed to lack of funds. In fact, it is a common occurrence for funds to be returned at the end of the year because not enough people qualified for the grants available. But, the government is not the only potential source of a small business grant. Businesses will frequently form a “private foundation” which is responsible for disbursing funds set aside for grants and other useful community needs.

The incentive for a company to use a private foundation is simple: tax savings. A company will pay less in corporate taxes when it gives away a small business grant than if it merely reported the income. Therefore, the private business community is an excellent grant source and is expected to be so in the future unless the tax code is significantly altered.++The best way to ensure that your small business grant is approved is to be organized and very thorough in filling out the application.

A winning small business grant will generally include a business plan that includes a detailed explanation of what funds are needed and why. But the most important thing to remember is to fill out the application thoroughly and exactly as directed. Attention to detail is what will separate the winners of a small business grant from the losers. Make sure to read and re-read the instructions. Look at previous successful grants with a particular agency and learn from how they structured their proposal. Don’t cut corners  because you don’t know what to write. Your successful competitors will know, and you can level the playing field by retaining a grant writing specialist who can deal with your content area, but who also has the experience to get a solid application done for the specific grant mechanism you want to get.

Still, because the money is readily available, even if your business is retail oriented, it may be of benefit to check into business grants for women available for various resources that could assist you in your business.According to Denouement Solutions and Grants.gov, the United States government and its government organizations offer more 1000 grants totaling more than $400 billion in grant funding every year. Only 10 percent of citizens that qualify for these grants actually apply for grants, despite the fact that many more than that would qualify for a business grant for women. Therefore, even though not every individual or business is eligible for a business grant for women, it certainly can be beneficial to check into business grants for women.

According to grants.gov, the United States government’s web site and main resource for grants that are available and can be applied for, there are more than 1000 grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. These programs fall into 21 different categories, as defined by the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. While some agencies may list available grants under multiple grant categories, the Federal government lists these categories of grants as follows:

Agriculture ,Art ,Business and Commerce ,Community Development ,Consumer Protection ,Disaster Prevention and Relief ,Education ,Employment, Labor, and Training ,Energy ,Environmental Quality ,Food and Nutrition ,Health ,Housing ,Humanities ,Information and Statistics ,Law, Justice, and Legal Service ,Natural Resources ,Regional Development ,Science and Technology ,Social Services and Income Security ,Transportation ,Business Grant money,Small Business grant money,Grant money for small business,Technology grant money,

Even though the category of Business and Commerce may be what appears to have the largest selection of resources for smallbusiness grants for women, consider the other categories as well, according to where your business falls. For example, if your business is a restaurant, don’t hesitate to check the Food and Nutrition category for grants currently available. If your business is a farm, check the Agriculture section.
Grants aren’t available for starting or opening a new business, and they also aren’t available for expanding on an existing business. However, business grants for women can offer funding for research or development of the business. Many grants may not be applicable to your particular business or needs, but there may be funds available for research, education, or other things needed for you to operate and improve your business to help you achieve business growth.In general, when considering the options for a business grant for women, do your homework and read carefully. Look at all grants available that might be related to your particular business. Consider looking into the Business and Commerce section, of Grants.gov, as mentioned, and also look into the different categories of grant fundings.

Take the time needed to read the grant qualifications carefully. With any business, check into the Regional Development category, as well as the Community Development category. Free College Grant Money: More Sources

If you need college grant money, this article is for you. More sources for grants mean more opportunity to get money. Money you can use for tuition, textbooks, living expenses, a computer, transportation, and other student expenses.

Let’s get into the sources. First of all, have you heard of Ted Kennedy? He is the senate chairman of the education committee. Recently, he and President Bush came to an agreement on education finance. As a result, over $20 billion will move from other programs into the Pell grant program – which you may have applied to.

Everybody knows about Pell grants. Just thought you’d like to know that more people will receive Pells in the years ahead. Now on to more sources you may not have heard of yet.

Have you heard of the National Sea Grant College Program? It is an office of the federal government that studies seas and oceans. They offer grants to college students in every coastal and great lakes state. Think about all that coastline – that’s a lot of states! This is their website:

Also, NASA offers a college grant program. NASA has several outreach programs for students, for students at all levels. For higher education, NASA offers a grant and scholarship program for space research projects. Go to this link, and click for students and then higher education:

The above programs are great. And the federal government offers in addition to the Pell grant, the Federal Supplemental Equal Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), and the Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART grants). To learn more about these federal programs, you can go to:

But that’s just the start. You may not have enough for school even after all the federal programs listed above. Many more programs exist for you to check into for college grant money. For instance, have you checked with your state lately?

Every one of the fifty states has at least one program of its own. Some, like California and New York State, have several. You might be surprised when you look up your state. You can get government money for college all across the country.

And it doesn’t stop their. Do you live in a territory or the District of Columbia? Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. both have excellent student grant programs. The only territory you might have trouble with: The Northern Marianas, you know, Saipan, Tinian, Rota, it’s an island chain. And maybe American Samoa. Otherwise, you should find a program you can apply to for aid.

As you might expect, some of the smaller states don’t compare to the large, more populous ones. These will have fewer programs, perhaps just one or two. The large states, like Texas, will have many more. Having choices in your college funding helps as you look for tuition money. This short article search for grants.

Some states offer grants for students at vocational schools or even for part time students or nontraditional students returning to school. Very helpful that people have set up programs like this for so many who need help.

One other idea. Many states have banded together to offer discounts and exceptions for out of state students in certain cases or for certain schools. I hadn’t seen these agreements before researching and writing about government money for college opportunities. It turns out that a group of states in the Rockies and west formed an alliance, as did a group of states in the south. A few plains states also offer waivers, but not as a group.

This can help you attend a good school that would normally be out of reach if you fall in the right category. Instead of paying out of state tuition, you can get an exception and pay in state tuition as if you were a normal resident, and finish your degree.

For state programs, take a look at your state government site and look for higher education programs. Then, look for a grants page or one about financial aid. With some looking, you can find these great programs.

While poor management is often cited most frequently as the reason businesses fail, inadequate financing is a close second. Whether you’re starting a business or expanding one, sufficient capital is essential. But you must also have the knowledge and planning required to manage the financing correctly. Some of the commons mistakes to avoid include: securing the wrong type of financing, miscalculating the amount required, or underestimating the cost of borrowing money.

If you work through your local Small Business Development Centers (SBDC), the advisers there help you in your SBA loan application as well as help you avoid some of those mistakes. The SBA loan programs are operated through private-sector lenders that provide loans which are, in turn, guaranteed by the SBA. Most private lenders (banks, credit unions, etc.) are familiar with SBA loan programs. Working with the SBCD can help facilitate your applications because they are a government agency that have experience helping to get money for small business and they have existing relationships with local banks.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE POSSIBLE LOANS AVAILABLE FROM SBA

The loan guaranty which SBA provides transfers the risk of borrower non-payment, up to the amount of the guaranty, from the lender to SBA. Therefore, when a business applies for an SBA Loan, they are actually applying for a commercial loan, structured according to SBA requirements, which receives an SBA guaranty.

7(a) Loan Guaranty Program – One of the SBA’s primary loan programs is called 7(a) and offers loans of up to $1,000,000. (the maximum dollar amount the SBA will guaranty is generally $1 million.)

Certified Development Company (CDC), a 504 Loan Program – Provides long-term, fixed-rate financing to small businesses to acquire real estate or machinery or equipment for expansion or modernization. Typically a 504 project includes a loan secured from a private-sector lender (local bank) with a senior lien, a loan secured from a CDC (funded by a 100 percent SBA-guaranteed debenture) with a junior lien covering up to 40 percent of the total cost, and a contribution of at least 10 percent equity from the borrower.

SBA loan financing is provided for a wide range of businesses. Some examples of the types of businesses that can apply for a small business loan through the SBA include: Assisted living facilities, Auto businesses, Business supplies, Chiropractors, Construction loans, Convenience stores, Day care centers, Franchises, Funeral homes, Gas stations, Hotels/motels, Nursing homes, Restaurants, and Women-owned businesses. SBA loans are also available for professional service businesses like Doctors, Dentists and Veterinarians.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF SBA LOANS

Less Money Down – You can leverage your personal or investment capital harder with an SBA-guaranteed loan, which means you can get more done with less up-front investment.

Longer Payback Terms – You can improve your cash flow with lower monthly payments. And where possible, you can fix a better match between loan terms and the longer-term rates of depreciation for capitalized equipment or real estate.

Lower Interest Rates -Because the SBA absorbs a significant percentage of the lending bank’s loan risk, the bank can lend at a lower interest rate

No Balloon Payment Required -You can establish terms that minimize your monthly payment without attaching a large pay out at the end of the loan.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE QUALIFICATIONS NECESSARY TO SECURE AN SBA LOAN ?

• Business Plan – you must not only know how to make a business plan, but make sure it includes some of the following essentials: The unique marketing strategy and advantage of the product or service you are offering; the strength and experience of the small business management team; and the purpose of the loan

• Cash Flow Statement – this cash flow statement must show the revenue stream and income available to pay back the loan in 5-7 years time.

• Credit History – to have both acceptable personal and business credit history

• Personal Equity Investment – the SBA and lenders want to know that you have personally invested money in your small business – which is usually between 10-20% of what is needed.

• Security and Guarantee for Loan – the SBA will require you to pledge available business assets, and in some cases, personal assets to secure your loan.

Whether you are a start up or if you have a successful small business and need money for expansion and growth, the SBA is a very reasonable and easy way to get the business financing you need.

How To Get A Small Business Loan

To get a small business loan, a firm requires submitting an appropriate application form. There are different types of application forms for different categories of loans. The information furnished in the application covers, inter alia, the following: the name and address of the borrower and his establishment; the details of the borrowers business; and the nature and amount of security offered.

The application form has to be supported by various ancillary statements like the financial statements and financial projections of the firm. The application is then processed. This primarily involves an examination of the factors like ability, integrity and experience of the borrower in the particular business. General prospects of the borrower’s business, purpose of grant, requirement of the borrower and its reasonableness are also taken into perspective when granting loan.

Once the application is duly processed, it is put up for sanction to the appropriate authority. If the sanction is given by the appropriate authority along with the sanction of loan, the bank specifies the terms and conditions applicable to the loan. These usually cover the amount of loan or the maximum limit of the grant, the nature of the grant, the period for which the grant will be valid, the rate of interest applicable to the grant, the primary security to be charged, the insurance of the security, the details of collateral security, if any, to be provided, and the margin to be maintained.

Working capital advances are provided by commercial banks in three primary ways: cash credits/overdrafts, loans, and purchase/discount of bills. In addition to these forms of direct finance, commercial banks help their customers in obtaining credit from other sources through the letter of credit arrangement. Under a cash credit arrangement, a predetermined limit for borrowing is specified by the bank. The borrower can draw as often as required provided the outstandings do not exceed the cash credit limit.
