Free College Grant Money: More Sources

If you need college grant money, this article is for you. More sources for grants mean more opportunity to get money. Money you can use for tuition, textbooks, living expenses, a computer, transportation, and other student expenses.

Let’s get into the sources. First of all, have you heard of Ted Kennedy? He is the senate chairman of the education committee. Recently, he and President Bush came to an agreement on education finance. As a result, over $20 billion will move from other programs into the Pell grant program – which you may have applied to.

Everybody knows about Pell grants. Just thought you’d like to know that more people will receive Pells in the years ahead. Now on to more sources you may not have heard of yet.

Have you heard of the National Sea Grant College Program? It is an office of the federal government that studies seas and oceans. They offer grants to college students in every coastal and great lakes state. Think about all that coastline – that’s a lot of states! This is their website:

Also, NASA offers a college grant program. NASA has several outreach programs for students, for students at all levels. For higher education, NASA offers a grant and scholarship program for space research projects. Go to this link, and click for students and then higher education:

The above programs are great. And the federal government offers in addition to the Pell grant, the Federal Supplemental Equal Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), and the Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART grants). To learn more about these federal programs, you can go to:

But that’s just the start. You may not have enough for school even after all the federal programs listed above. Many more programs exist for you to check into for college grant money. For instance, have you checked with your state lately?

Every one of the fifty states has at least one program of its own. Some, like California and New York State, have several. You might be surprised when you look up your state. You can get government money for college all across the country.

And it doesn’t stop their. Do you live in a territory or the District of Columbia? Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. both have excellent student grant programs. The only territory you might have trouble with: The Northern Marianas, you know, Saipan, Tinian, Rota, it’s an island chain. And maybe American Samoa. Otherwise, you should find a program you can apply to for aid.

As you might expect, some of the smaller states don’t compare to the large, more populous ones. These will have fewer programs, perhaps just one or two. The large states, like Texas, will have many more. Having choices in your college funding helps as you look for tuition money. This short article search for grants.

Some states offer grants for students at vocational schools or even for part time students or nontraditional students returning to school. Very helpful that people have set up programs like this for so many who need help.

One other idea. Many states have banded together to offer discounts and exceptions for out of state students in certain cases or for certain schools. I hadn’t seen these agreements before researching and writing about government money for college opportunities. It turns out that a group of states in the Rockies and west formed an alliance, as did a group of states in the south. A few plains states also offer waivers, but not as a group.

This can help you attend a good school that would normally be out of reach if you fall in the right category. Instead of paying out of state tuition, you can get an exception and pay in state tuition as if you were a normal resident, and finish your degree.

For state programs, take a look at your state government site and look for higher education programs. Then, look for a grants page or one about financial aid. With some looking, you can find these great programs.

3 Common Types Of College Scholarship Grants

For there are several college students that need some help in order to continue their studies, there are college scholarship grants given to those who are in need or with special talent on a certain field.

There are 3 common types of scholarships grants awarded to college students and soon-to-be college students: athletic scholarship grant, academic scholarship grant, and departmental awards. Each has its criteria to consider before awarding the grant. Each also has a particular group of student to target.

Academic Scholarship Grant

This type of scholarship grant is awarded to students who achieve a qualified GPA or has achieved an exceptional academic performance before entering college. This grant is usually awarded to students who have received honors. It is sometimes awarded automatically upon entering college or university but most schools require application for academic scholarship grants.

Basically, the primary focus of schools giving academic scholarship is of course the academic aspect; however, some colleges and universities base the grant on either merit or need, or both.

Upon passing an academic scholarship grant, the student is required to maintain a ceiling grade. If not achieved after the end of the term, colleges and universities usually put the student on probationary status until the grades reached the prescribed level. If not achieved however, the academic scholarship grand may be terminated.

Athletic Scholarship Grant

If you are on the competitive edge, you get an athletic scholarship grant. However, this is highly sought after type of scholarship and there are many students applying for this.

An athlete of course wants to go through college for free using this type of scholarship. Some even dream to finish college as an athlete. And this dream is not far from the realizing. With good personal marketing and exceptional skill in any sport, you will be able to apply and be granted with this type of scholarship.

Departmental Awards

This type of scholarship grant aims to provide the student with the option to stay or take up his or her studies on a particular department. Usually, it is offered to exceptional students with desire to take other fields. The departmental awards are given so as not to keep the students in the department. Or, it is given to attract interested students to take study at a particular department.

You can inquire about this type of scholarship directly on the department of the school.

There are other college scholarship grants that are given to students but basically, these three are the ones given by the schools themselves.

Invest Your Way Through School With Federal College Grants

College grants are extremely useful and beneficial for students. These grants help the students with their studies and also give a certain amount of sustain to the families of the students. Irrespective of the financial condition of the families, there are several government programs that help students in covering their cost of education.

The students who are studying in the United States of America can prefer for the federal college grants. This type of grant can be available to those students who meet a variety of qualifying criteria. In simple terms it can be said that this grant is a type of aid that is awarded by the federal government to students for their studies. They do not have to give back if they get this grant.

The federal college grants is the result of the efforts of the United States Congress that established some of the Basic Educational Opportunity Grants in the early years of the 1970s. The federal college grants aims at helping those likely students and makes it assertable for them so that they can go to some of the best and expensive colleges and universities.

However students must take the first step towards the federal college grants by applying for them. Thus for applying for the grant, the students will have to fill up the FAFSA form.

Every student would want to get the federal college grants. But before expecting to get this grant they must have the knowledge of certain things. Since these grants come from the government funds, therefore they are restricted. Thus if a student attends a college or a university, which has lower tuition rates then the grant would cover a greater percentage of the tuition fees. In such cases you can seek out help from the university or other organizations so that your education gets fully supported.

The expected contribution of the parents plays a key role in the process of the need analysis that is done by the government. Many times the expected contribution is higher than in reality what is possible for most families. This expected contribution also affects the amount of federal college grants that can be available for the students.

A College Financial Aid Model for Private K–12 Students

One of President Bush’s education initiatives that would model private K–12 financing on a popular federal college financial aid program has sparked renewed debate about school vouchers and federal funding for private education.?

Pell Grants for Kids, a proposed $300 million federal funding program for private K–12 education, would provide government-backed grants to low-income families to help them send their children to private, faith-based, or higher performing out-of-district public schools. The program’s philosophy is based on the notion that, like a college education, elementary and secondary education is best served when based on choice.

President Bush used his final State of the Union address at the end of January to call for congressional support of the Pell Grants for Kids initiative. The presidential behest drew immediate challenges from educators and politicians about the potential effectiveness of the program in the president’s push to privatize education.

Lawmakers questioned whether the Pell Grants for Kids program actually implements school vouchers rather than grants and whether the proposed $300 million budget would be enough for participating low-income parents to avoid having to seek supplemental or other financial aid that resembles college loans.

Pell Grants for Kids vs. College Pell Grants: Considerations Besides Financial Need

The Pell Grants for Kids program follows in the shoes of its college sibling by providing education funding that, unlike other forms of federal financial aid, such as parent or student loans, doesn’t need to be repaid.

Both programs also target low-income students in situations of extreme financial need.

Pell Grants for Kids awards, however, would differ from postsecondary Pell Grants by going beyond financial need to also consider a student’s educational environment in determining eligibility:

Students from schools that fail to meet the performance requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act are the primary targets of the Pell Grants for Kids program.

Pell Grants for Kids would be aimed at eligible low-income students enrolled in high schools with graduation rates less than 60 percent or in elementary and secondary schools that have failed to meet No Child Left Behind performance standards for five years.

School Vouchers Masquerading as Grants?

Although the administration has gone to great lengths to brand Pell Grants for Kids a “scholarship program,” even taking the name of the long-running federal college Pell Grant program, the bipartisan support behind college Pell Grants has been noticeably lacking from the president’s Pell Grants for Kids proposal.

Many Democrats claim Pell Grants for Kids aren’t simply scholarships but school vouchers being pitched to the public as grants.

Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts has come out aggressively against the president’s proposal. Sen. Kennedy, who chairs the Health, Education, and Labor committee, criticizes the Pell Grants for Kids initiative for failing to “expand educational opportunity,” contrary to its proffered goal.

Instead, says Sen. Kennedy, Pell Grants for Kids will “siphon scare resources from our public schools to create new voucher programs.”

On the other side of the aisle, Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee doesn’t argue against the characterization of Pell Grants for Kids as a voucher program but rather maintains that vouchers do work.

Sen. Alexander points to highly successful federal voucher programs — including college Pell Grants, federal student loans, the GI Bill, and daycare certificates — as examples of why he believes in the success potential of Pell Grants for Kids.

In fact, Sen. Alexander has proposed a Pell Grants for Kids budget of $15 billion — a budget 50 times higher than the president’s proposed $300 million.

Tuition Outstrips Federal Aid: The Math Behind Pell Grants for Kids

In either scenario, whether an approved budget for Pell Grants for Kids were to be the president’s proposed $300 million or Sen. Alexander’s $15 billion, individual grant awards would likely not be enough to cover the full cost of K–12 private school tuition.

Here are a few numbers to consider:

$20. The Pell Grant amount each of the country’s 15 million low-income children enrolled in public schools would receive under the president’s proposed $300 million budget.

$500. The Pell Grant amount each of the country’s 30 million low- and middle-income children enrolled in public schools would receive under Sen. Alexander’s proposed $15 billion budget.

$4,689. The average annual cost of tuition at private K–12 schools nationwide, according to a 2006 report by the National Center for Education Statistics.

120,000. The number of children under President Bush’s plan who would receive a $2,500 Pell Grant — less than 1 percent of the total number of low-income children currently enrolled in public schools.

6,000,000. The number of children under Sen. Alexander’s plan who would receive a $2,500 Pell Grant — 20 percent of the total number of low- and middle-income children currently enrolled in public schools.

Whether Pell Grants for Kids should actually be regarded as vouchers rather than as scholarships akin to college Pell Grants, it seems that the K–12 Pell Grants for Kids will still share with college Pell Grants an award amount that, in most cases, can’t cover tuition costs: College Pell Grants are capped at $4,310 for the 2007–08 academic year, while in-state tuition and fees at four-year public colleges averaged $6,185 for 2007–08.

Private Loans for K–12 Programs

In the same way that students with college Pell Grants must often supplement their grant award with work-study and federal student loans, the low-and middle-income families who would qualify for a Pell Grant for Kids may need to turn to other financial aid options to help meet the full cost of private K–12 tuition.

Parents of elementary and high-school students in private programs can generally apply for credit-based K–12 similar to the private student loans available to undergraduate and graduate students.
